The bride was presented with a flavour menu and chose old fashioned apple chutney for the boys and victoria plum jams for the girls. The jams and chutneys were made for Doily Days by Auntie Val in her magical workshop in Storrington (www.auntievals.com). The labels were personalised with the bride and grooms names, wedding date and location. And finally - the icing on the cake, small circles of mismatching fabric were tied to the top with raffia (fabric chosen, pinked and tied with my own fair hands!). The favours looked so gorgeous I had to take them on an outing to the beach and get some piccys! The favours are £2 each and we can provide old fashioned sweets if you prefer - sugar mice, dolly mixture, rhubarb & custard etc.... all enquiries via the website www.doilydays.co.ukHelen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-29288273908459428742010-08-09T02:35:00.000-07:002010-08-09T02:50:27.779-07:00Somerset Wedding<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgYMDBJluTJvvW6GfbI8WCC_tjYmO1OmNCf-nBnfLwaWsu5IoRcABEJVV2krr09uf-HRLfS9WWZiHOa4hYdHEsDUIBbFGwd8yWKfZvolKYYAjM720wL9FTaaEBXWtRNlSD2c-VYE71IF_w/s320/Brympton+037.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503345178371041122" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgT0tdSTmXKLrTOtTsbuP9b5xbyim2Pm4ZJ_jVnTkMUuU8gqZXdWPkeJ3cn7fZ24cfD23_mp1KyK7hk2J-nfWzdVDBa6FZ4QFDix_WGvOp9MhgrsPrjEkritr5CaCkoiPb5P2R-gWqiqTA/s320/Brympton+038.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503345167343031986" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYcShtrLJi-u-GtFoTXbbcAHvKfWjLquC05TORrm1wZ2vBUIr0zHznmzOa0FhNcGPsYsWypqXcfZj5wZvr5JS1KpkyoSOSjrpyg8g-9dWsucQPoCTaFDPenG-4iZWk-GZSOEuTw9rqhb8/s320/Brympton+014.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503345161478860866" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjFgWUkCCgqWtgUs9aMvw7oXbvA4BBAq7l7PfBDdbAycVsz8nIx0k1lUzpBGerYiAUp2ddXbkFnPXzd2zECLXi2vZWmxSwo3LzZHMR7B4x64fEHMfJfTxWwHTZxGcUoQVarCxOoQs_LK4c/s320/Brympton+011.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503345152510522642" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhml2Whdsz6EKJeWCAd_Xq7APtC4v4KIx_DjOsFln7kpmdIJl3SXRfkU4JcDEKuvRy7XITF1eLuQyqaSDo7cmft78txE1OIeX9dPOxcIx3Hr6WNKaH2XJ_jzhqKAvX8UznL-Ug7l431-Ew/s320/Brympton+006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5503345147401062466" />
Phew... I have just returned from a whirlwind couple of days in Somerset. I was providing table decorations etc for a lovely couple who had their reception at the beautiful Brympton House near Yeovil in Somerset (www.brympton-weddings.co.uk). I provided mismatching vintage sideplates and teacups for their tables, teapots, coffee pots, a tableplan, rustic namecards and 'country garden' style wedding favours (small jars of old fashioned apple chutney for the boys and victoria plum jam for the girls).

Brympton House is a gorgeous venue and was used in the film 'Chocolat' with Johnny Depp! My B&B was pretty amazing too!

It was hard work but all worth it and I can't wait to see the professionl pics of the tables complete with the flowers. Bella & Fifi provided the flowers and their website has a distinct 'Doily Days' feel! (www.bellafififlowers.co.uk)

I had time to kill of Friday and managed to pick up lots of vintage china in Yeovil, Sherbourne and Crewkerne. All in all a great trip.Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-91744638054335896872010-07-08T05:15:00.000-07:002010-07-08T05:26:40.020-07:00The Essence of Doily Days<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 213px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhYksz8Nj2IfchNQx74ZNLOG4L_5flgehVS3dcIlGZVQ9LR_UuiB73J6sQn_0WNvExukbiVGoLawEo6LanG5m6C1ptxh7rxwhSY6HAPhq6fBM7p1emSgXBIIIl14k1eFiwkTHf7e857RO0/s320/strawberries-in-tea-cups.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491510768073077474" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 291px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjqeZk4g4w3u8qUUr59hUZMTOMFHVmD059DC5deSLJFKzYxD0cuFC7b9ObAzKsPanjR6xCgVcRm9Zk3lmDohyphenhyphen5QscUli8HHOtpRF-qeTDHtWTFk-S2U9bIjR9xASeuXTR_VdOt2N-0cu6A/s320/victoria+sponge.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491510764464894882" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgQPj40KYngnSSGnB66SEiwbsNBIWEgJAk29ZiG0jCXskuVl2zBbWDFr1IyFUxdNdIZ9uklKzEinDrOew3Ahjpy2llgc99jASE1r5gioES4i_0WoeNmjhuaYSULAIRZnapqmChLgTQL0r8/s320/cath+kidston.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491510755575374802" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 225px; height: 281px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhsxv7SxqAVuKSbG9krhkUryd5M786BmVm-a9jF-YKW8tWb4Qp9OoUjVW3BqKOkcU2-DSQ8aIDl6avnAHWw7bxnv2poz8As46Z_9Ia1LvCtDaqXkATJM6J85R5yfZT6OW8Ci3mngIp9hQ4/s320/lemonade_l.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491510749276965442" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 250px; height: 137px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgMmpjZ7MTCDVqiF6vs5VSfN-9ON7ATcMTtsZmVyyfBF4RHsfudkYGE2jicAGt8tF41T9JSURp-y_uHYPyetQq2WfcQB_hMkBh77Wk5e-Vc1Gsv3prW50jV-Edjg7YmMfbKN9MiidySHdU/s320/morris_minor_convertible.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5491510740117266818" />
I recently read an article about exploring your brand identity so I made myelf a coffee and put it into practice for Doily Days. Just a baby actually. It was born last May and has gone from strength to strength ever since. We've been lucky enough to be involved in some fantastic events so far - an 'art deco' style wedding complete with orchids, black and HOT pink decorations... a charity event comprising different 'country garden'
themes for each table, a 90th birthday party in London where the theme was 'colourful' - Lily of the Valley was shipped in at great expense but the amazing scent was priceless (that wasn't the colourful part! The colourful part was tulips, hyaciths, menu cards complete with vibrant feathers and vases in all the colours of the rainbow). A retirement party in Worthing, a rainy :( wedding in Kent complete with VW transport and rustic hog roast. Beautiful cake stands have been created.... fabulous plates have been smashed in the process :( I've stayed up very late drinking wine and making cute wedding favours, I've learnt the names of my favourite flowers, I made hampers at Christmas time, I've spent a LOT of time at car boot sales and charity shops and i've consumed far too many Rhubarb and custard sweets!

As for the future - Sandy (the beautiful splitscreen camper) is soon to mark a special occassion for some young girls as we're transporting them to their prom! A Surrey wedding is on the cards next month - Vintage china, rustic floral centrepieces and homemade namecards... we're off to Somerset in August to beautiful Brypton D'Evercy (www.brympton-weddings.co.uk). Also in August we're keeping it local and providing VW transport for a blushing bride and her hubby to be in our native Brighton (she's the assistant manager at Cath Kidston don't you know!). Sempember - Sandy's busy looking beautiful again and we're off to Duncton Mill for a tea party/hog roast extravaganza!

Thank you for all your support in our first year! We're looking forward to the rest of the season and many 'Doily Days' to come.... xxxHelen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-23810834808481471062010-04-29T02:26:00.001-07:002010-04-29T02:35:09.278-07:00Mismatching Vintage Plates for BBQ/Hog Roast style wedding<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgxrym9RQKY8_Twsnuan0S8kRwNq54rGUTErXUahz2QFKm3-3vnKIVkI_jWVKV7-wNA05DYYimUsdnac5IZ6esXPlmW-HODMLeZMZRENeibvgWsuxJeyPYs6Ut7rKkn7VJpm46_MHvAo1g/s320/Plates+%26+Bowls+004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465490630024748386" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEg9uAF_CeLqNUKerPbfULUhLlA-aTj2LAjl4W1bp6218ULxiqpFvSeNaczUgfxrqyLN5_AGwVQw7nj2xmp5GZiXsCpq6bBksXH7-6eNfP290JaXc5jKnJln7WKH78AmMztiD1oMK0r5Ig8/s320/Plates+%26+Bowls+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5465490627858866898" />
One of my clients is getting married in Henfield in August. She is having a wedding that is right up my street. A marquee in a field opposite her parents cottage, they're getting all the food themselves and a local community group is BBQing for them. They're hiring vintage china from Doily Days! The tables will be laid with mismatching main plates. The client is making her own jams and chutneys for wedding favours and I am providing old fashioned jugs and vases for her bunches of seasonal flowers. They're having bunting and they're colecting jam jars for the tables... I'm proving mismatching platters and bowls for their BBQ buffet. For dessert they're having a selection of cakes (so I'll be proving cake stands) and trifles (so I'll be proving cute little vintage bowls) sigh. Love it! And so pleased to be a part of it. Can't wait to see the pictures.

I was washing up a few of the plates before I packed them up for our meeting and I thought they looked lovely drying in the rack - what do you think?Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com2tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-12125803426731186032010-04-19T03:17:00.000-07:002010-04-19T03:29:02.558-07:00New Teacups<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiEDTzwm6lMX3COfSS3DCGAgvK-PsWU8SnXx6iLpC4nGRkxF2UU-jbXKocHfJkPtVivW-3T1LF5Wh5224I4dKBQD7dMkcTK7GUC3Vbg-0m9RN7eAfEV8UjcAgFn3HFj1xp49239ZA-bbfQ/s320/Favours+019.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461793669801914082" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhTBnVQEQhaiWS3FhAxkMqpCPJ3vEkmUumTq6W2s_GChYUKNZlJ-mXTf8jYwjeLG5IUMPTq29EdBTmfHUrDU9mGaynmz9F5Z0K3LLlzM85y6JQzri-NZDaBEGfllrwphsEzUuyaDmHh2QQ/s320/Favours+018.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461793660311507234" />
The car boot season has well started as far as I'm concerned - clear, sunny morning, armed with a purse full of change - my very favourite start to any Sunday morning.

My local car boot sale was actually on Saturday. The first one of the season. There was one planned for 3rd April but due to the horrendous weather it was cancelled (much to my dismay).

I purchased some perfect plates with which to make cake stands (it's the middle tier that's tricky!), a beautiful navy blue top with cream ruffles (a snip at just £2.40), some adorable fabric to use for my wedding favours and last but not least some sexy new teacups. They are Grindley and the design is quite different from the rest of my collection. Six teacups & saucers, six plates and a milk jug all for £4! Plus the woman took my business card because she may have someone interested in my services.... you can't say fairer than that can you?Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-47807183843596884412010-04-19T03:02:00.000-07:002010-04-19T03:16:31.717-07:00Wedding Favours<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgKx1XBLXiK5YSku3BGXI19r9RvCnP9swQW0k55_q0Ko35c8bhHZu5Bgv3xdOMXDbzXj1hbA0xqopujXfFZpPuLeo9gJatYLm7qmySCuW7GQLwkoDeZcLygP-bVFPP4WitQH3jQwp75cEw/s320/Favours+016.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461790442299118818" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvnv9GPPMMkIXpQSKPlEPVgjRHEmrfKFfrwar88yi6_E9Fqbd0MxP6ijV7nQVfPNLssRAHhprQ6KAKcHsChBvV3YgUGTs-O9YIkdK33db30eB6eGN4fi58RJ9BSha8YftjD3SEoPbXidM/s320/Favours+009.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461790436942860370" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhvu8ysSZzdJou1isfJdaHI5o7Ybfl_Kt-A9t74yRuIjWJq46JvBbqFPubaLTVNuYCx5uRUPdTAZdBKxK2Ks0NUcGoD3buPE0zoFUePM0pRwM6ajeSLFd95on7HicOPswI-PNgz5xQyG8w/s320/Favours+004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5461790428201851874" />
One of my clients is getting married in less than two weeks! She found out about Doily Days when she read the fantastic article on Daily Candy back in September http://www.dailycandy.com/all-cities/article/74345/Doily-Days-Vintage-Events

I agreed to make her 140 'country garden' style wedding favours - small glass jars full of old fashioned sweets. See the last blog post for the fun I had at the wholesalers buying the sweets! I felt like a kid again....

I bought some pinking scissors at great expense and set to work cutting circles of fabric. Luckily I have quite a stash of fabric as it's something else I can't resist on my car boot sale missions. I found the perfect size sugar bowl to draw round and then set to work cutting out the circles. Luckily my friend Emma joined me that evening - armed with supplies of red wine and chocolate! So we chatted while i snipped and she set to work filling the jars with the sweets.

But Emma had to leave at about 11pm (because she has a 'proper' job and has to make serious decisions) and I was up until about 2am - tying the fabric to the top of the jars - eyes propped open with matchsticks, the only thing keeping me going was the sugar rush from the sweets I kept dipping into! Anyway, 2am and I was still only half way through so the next morning I cracked on - seemed to have it down to a fine art by that point and got them all done and dusted!

I was sooo pleased with the result and I think they will look lovely on the wedding tables.

I collected some more gorgeous fabric at the weekend because I am making 130 similar favours for a wedding in August - this time the jars will be full of homemade jams and chutneys.Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-36485599444300173602010-04-12T06:15:00.000-07:002010-04-12T06:43:58.028-07:00Doily Days Bargains!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgGgM_YMuIGqVu3cBe6ZU3Fsb3p6H5HqgnJ0qNDoZu2GkMuYzwALUB58sO_yFpn6E3keglx3fOaQpHk1oMN-d4t63f3FUdm2uUEINJFT8vKkqhhIauQAQkghzNpLMR2blkK4QRqtcMnVYM/s320/Bargains+008.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459246269833636930" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjaqHun_SgpKXgjGNQnWQXKb5MPFFm6DRtrzFSr8j9KCa6YTwLfXseY813PjrE7Y21sf3myf6mMg88K6oGdmzMYrsPh7alu4ABNMjkU6Xw7hSenncYCmhVjx14raeBb6-Ab1thR5JJRCRA/s320/Bargains+006.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459246249393815650" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi4Faq-XVZKG-59Gk5Fy_w7mSrLCPwQjX9ZKexuNIEw0LDgFXIwSYrOX5wEDUmZZSSDOEX01dYq4bq87wG97CX7QIUTckLeyk8Kefk9nt5GcVDrRm_KsH-0DKxhhgAWg1bINMV8eTbM_wI/s320/Bargains+004.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459246241718873010" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgEutSAfFnY36A2wiM6Aax5B1mUKJ7ET7vb9ZUZBmZFhyaa9f4gjv1XO9J43N6B-ZsURTUlXc65w4HjbUp9OkFgl77ZtJTbje0JSSqhJEFcbE6LDAqsQD3CmkXxV13P0BFo8YiVMSqaWKk/s320/Bargains+001.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5459246228421740658" />
Well, the sun was shining on the South coast this weekend and for a change I had a little time on my hands so I thought a spot of car booting was in order! I meandered through the farmers market on Saturday morning nibbling on tasty morsals and smiling at the jolly farmers.

I found myself at the Sussex Yacht club where they were holding a car boot sale. Much of the stuff for sale was boat themed - not really up my street as I don't have a boat. But then I stumbled upon a bike! I jumped on, wobbled round for a bit and thought 'this has my name written all over it!'... well, not strictly true because my names not Raleigh but you know what I mean. I beat them down from £25 to £20 and peddled off to the beach! Great for this time of year and the perfect excuse to kick start my exercise regime...

But the bargains didn't end there - oh no. Sunday morning I found myself at Brighton Marina for the Sunday market. Again, sun shining. An hour or so later, some random banter with stall holders and some tense negotiations and I found myself waddling back to the car laden down with a COOL book about campervans, a vintage teapot, a gorgeous pink coffeepot (called Rose Cloud - love it), a three-tier wire cake stand, a pair of jeans and a teddy bear I couldn't leave behind...

I photographed my treasures to share with you.

And a quick reminder - if you'd like to hire any vintage china or book a VW Campervan please check out my website www.doilydays.co.ukHelen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-9539247123550788522010-04-09T11:23:00.000-07:002010-04-09T11:38:56.916-07:00Doily Days Does Sweets!<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 320px; height: 240px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEj8JLOldINGGVV_JhOf9ggMtivyiKwdtSOB5Rgaxe56x53eLrA8aBk8CY5sCdf8Eg7qbKd04GmbradofkeD61kANyv8ymZmacTTj5JOtdVd-_ztDGXhhNTwfnDR6OuOgI_FLKe7D3eUjIk/s320/Sweets+007.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458209060042969762" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 240px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhmm_g59dv3ftaNY7a2igkNHNqD_xh0EvG2Ftb-0-Otp6t5HYBibEAVdXVlnJmaRQ9LeWQwNnKuyrPoGAnbFld9bZbWnX3TNQsepIuOfc8b1cJSRTAClkN9UkhNtIjiFB6hJMcuSnjzt1A/s320/Sweets+002.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458209051071871730" />
<img style="float:left; margin:0 10px 10px 0;cursor:pointer; cursor:hand;width: 270px; height: 320px;" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEiI0BGA-C964PBWMOGxmzwwbdpaTNPlAjVB4EjEPYASt5QXWZl55DDUXDcUC96wBlxaKhAsM3YCu8e9Q4DAHe0dlloBEcQN2LZvx3etjwv_1LI_l2TL_4MV56UWAFKKV3MjF9myDN3001M/s320/Vick+mice.jpg" border="0" alt=""id="BLOGGER_PHOTO_ID_5458209037394572274" />
I have been like a kid in a sweetshop today! Well okay, like a kid in a massive wholesalers - wondering at the huge trolleys, marvelling at the price of breakfast cereal! I am in the process of making some wedding favours for a lovely bride to be and I need to deliver them next week - eeek! The clock is ticking... I have the little jars so todays mission was to buy the sweets. I deliberated for ages with my friend Mel (who was equally as enamoured by the huge array!) and I finally went for Rhubarb and Custard (but of course - sweet shop classic), Rosy Apples, I suprised myself by choosing Sherbert pips but I thought they were colourful, had a certain charm and the size would add a new dimension!... I also went for Dolly Mixture - could we rename it Doily Mixture? and last but by no means least - Sugar Mice!!!!! Ever since I saw this heartbreakingly beautiful polariod picture by Vicky Stevenson

www.vickeh.com/polaroids.php I've been on the hunt for some gorgeous sugar mice of my own!

Anyway - now I need to get cutting circles of fabric for the top of the jars and hey presto.
I have been gathering subjects for www.thebrightoncollective.co.uk/blog and this morning, from the safety of my bed, I have been writing about some amazing talent.

I want to share with you some Polaroid pictures taken by Vicky Stevenson. I am awe inspired and desperately want some of these prints to frame for my lounge. Her work can be viewed and brought via Etsy http://www.etsy.com/shop/vickeh Her blog is also fabulous and I was intigued by her night time walk along the pier off season. It sums up what it is to be a true Brightonian!
‘Last week I took a short walk along the seafront and down the pier, before returning home. The pier at night is like something out of Scooby-Doo when it’s off season. Most things are closed and there’s not many people about, half the rides have had their insides taken away or are in pieces. The cheesy 70’s music can still be heard all the way down.’

The accompanying photos depict some very emotive images – unused deckchairs stacked up, the dark eyes of cuddly puppies stuck in glass cages desperate but unlikely to be hooked by the giant silver arm. The ‘Kids play area’ desolate and dark looks absolutely eerie but I really feel what she’s doing here. http://vickeh.com/journal/

It would be great to use some cute knitted cakes in a photoshoot and to display in the shops... you never know Mum this might be your big chance to make some extra money and finally retire!Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-63577432274955165012010-03-01T04:40:00.000-08:002010-03-01T04:53:37.836-08:00Photo Heart

I once saw a magazine article about displaying photos in a 'polaroid heart'.... I thought it was fantastic and when I started contemplating a picture/piece of artwork to hang above my bed the polaroid heart came flooding back to me and I couldn't wait to get to work! I sorted out all the pictures I love from my computer, Facebook etc (about 50) - took them to the printers and ordered the prints with white borders (next best thing to polaroids!). Then I painstakingly arranged them in a heart shape above my bed.... I love it! And the best thing is it only cost me about £6.Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-51893026961769905792010-02-23T15:40:00.000-08:002010-02-23T15:52:49.490-08:00The Brighton Collective

As well as doing my bit for www.doilydays.co.uk I can also be found huddled over my laptop seeking talented local designers to write about for The Brighton Collective blog. http://www.thebrightoncollective.co.uk/blog/ I love researching the subjects, it makes me feel a real part of the cool creative scene in Brighton.... (even though I live seven miles down the coast and hardly ever venture into the city!) I mainly write about vintage inspired products as that is what interests me. I've added some pics here of products I've featured on the blog (Dress by www.digforvictoryclothing.com. Mr B Moustachio man and floral bag by www.stridedesigns.co.uk. I've been tying bows in my shoe laces for years....

In my quest to earn an honest bob while avoiding the perils of the 9am-5pm drudgery I applied to do a few hours work for 'Handmade by me'. The company is based in Peacehaven and they specialise in handmade invitations and cards for all occassions.

Samantha, who runs the company, is busy busy busy so she needs help putting the orders together. I was put to work - firstly sticking labels at the bottom of some beautiful textured card. This is not too hard I thought. Then I moved onto attaching a transparant sheet to the beautiful card. This was done by poking a heartshaped, gold pin into the top... again - so far so good and it was satisfying work. Then it was time to roll the scrolls. This was a bit tricky but I think I could have managed it. But the bow tying stage was to come - and could I do it? Could i hell.... My bows came out floppy, twisted, upside down. So I was taken off bow tying duty and put on twisting mini roses duty. I then pushed the roses behind the bows (that were expertly done by Samantha) and slipped them into postage tubes. Job done....

The next batch of invitations also involved bows - as these weren't scrolls I was more confident and the first couple came out okay! Much to Samantha's delight. But when I realised I was supposed to be tying a knot before the bow it went to pieces again.

So I was sent off with practice ribbons and card and I'm waiting to hear whether my bow tying career is over or whether it's just beginning!Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-35761869562459978782010-02-10T06:31:00.000-08:002010-02-10T06:43:39.916-08:00Wedding Favours and Nametags

I had a meeting with a client on Monday and made some sample favours to show her and some rustic, handmade namecards. I wanted to share them with you! The wedding favours are small pots of homemade jams and chutneys, personalised and topped with vintage fabric. In this case the client has asked for honey because she is such a fan.... she was even talking about naming her tables after different types of honey! We can do anything you like - chilli jam chutney, lemon curd. Your guests will remember the big day when they dig into their condiment!

The nametags are made to look like glamorous luggage tags. They can be tied to the napkin or onto a vintage teacup. See more pictures and read more about Doily Days www.doilydays.co.uk

Oh and I picked up some Rhubarb and Custard and Cola Cube sweets from the post office to display in bowls on the table.... and while I was there I picked up a quarter of Toffee Crumble (it was my boyfriends - ex-boyfriends... whatever, it's complicated - birthday yesterday so I decanted it into a cute (Jamie Oliver) jar and popped it back in the bag. I outsource most of the bookings to a VW owner in Eastbourne - he has a gorgeous camper called Poppy and a Beetle called Florence. She's having a 1950's theme - prom style wedding dress, Rat Pack band and a red double decker bus to transport her guests!

She has asked me to help with invitations to go with the theme so I've been doing a bit of research. I saw a fab idea where you personalise records - I think that could work really well. She is only having 30 guests to the ceremony. I'm sure I can rustle up 30 old records from charity shops - Elvis, Buddy Holly etc! And I'm sure my designer Charmain can come up with something equally as fabulous as the design you see in the picture.

The bride wants a different design for the evening guests so I found this fab image of a 'just married' sign on the back of a fifties style car. We could personalise this image with this wicked fifties style font!

While I was at it I came across some beautiful images from ruffledblog.com - I think they give some great ideas for pattern and colour to inspire the fifties theme.Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-63211985557168709102010-02-02T06:28:00.000-08:002010-02-02T06:35:51.440-08:00Caravan Project!

Hello again - I'm very excited because I got a phone call today from someone who has a 70's caravan and wants to work together on a project! He bought it for £100, fixed a leak, made it watertight and now he's lost interest and can't be bothered to do the inside.... music to my ears. His parents are happy to keep it on their drive so I don't need to worry about storage. I am going to beautify the interior in true Doily Days style - retro curtains, rugs, cushions, quilts, crockery etc etc and Steve will be on hand for the technical things that I don't understand! When it's finished I hope to feature it on my website, get some PR coverage and hire it out for photoshoots and festivals. Here is the first picture - you can track the progress as the Doily Days makeover unfolds!!!!!
Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-76517526352936292202010-02-01T04:40:00.000-08:002010-02-01T04:51:47.920-08:00Vintage China Mosaic

I must share with you some pictures of the fantastic Brighton based designer I have come across. To add to my excitement I've found out she's running a workshop on 27th February. I select plates from my vast collection of mismatching crockery - drill through the centre (yes, it is nervewracking!) and attach the screws, pillars and handle. Hey presto you have a very quaint, very kitsch item that is just crying out for scones piled high with lashings of cream and jam. It's also a beautiful was to showcase cup cakes in a teashop window. I hire the cakestands out for a mere £6 as well as teapots, plates, teacups, milk jugs, sugar bowls, vases etc etc. No job is too small so if you fancy a retro afternoon tea for a birthday party, christening, hen party or wedding please get in touch! I can also help with music, flowers etc - I just love styling for events. Hmmmmm. Okay, so New Years Resolutions! Staring from NOW I will keep you updated with things that inspire me and my business www.doilydays.co.uk and feature creative people I meet along the way.

There's loads to blog about. I want to tell you all about the vintage cakestands I'm making, the 'Afternoon Tea' hen parties I'm planning in Brighton and the bookings I've taken for this year. But first things first I want to tell you about the table decorations I did for a 90th birthday lunch in London last weekend.

The event was for 20 people at The Lansdown Club in Mayfair. The brief was 'colourful' so I set to work and came up with menucards for each person featuring a brightly coloured feather, then there were multicoloured namecards which picked out the colours in the flowers - fresias, hyacinths, tulips and, birthday girls favourite, Lily of the Valley - Not colourful I know but absolutely beautiful, full of nostalgic charm and the scent was increadible. I also wrapped 20 packets of Cornish fudge in vibrant tissue paper and ribbon for the guests to enjoy with their coffee and finally I arranged some tealights on a cakestand with some faux flowers - these were for the birthday girl to blow out with her profiterole tower!

My next blog article will be about my homemade vintage cakestands!Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com1tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-85929347700293911932009-08-07T02:20:00.000-07:002009-08-07T02:39:25.931-07:00Gaining momentumOkay so after my initial joy at having created my own blog I went somewhat off the radar... but now i'm back and am intending to add a new post as regularly as possible.

I have been busy over the past couple of weeks because I was asked by lovely Katherine Hudson of the Arabian Tent Company to assist her with a charity event and photoshoot. The event was in private grounds in Crowborough and it was to raise money for the childrens charity Starlight. Katherine set up her Tea Tent which is gorgeous and features vintage doilies all over the ceiling! We like this a lot... it also features fabric cakes all over the walls, a huge Moroccan lantern hanging from the roof (which apparently is made from sardine tins!) and yards and yards of bunting jauntily hanging down the sides. You can see pictures of the tent on Katherine's website www.arabiantents.com

I set to work coming up with a centrepiece for each of the 10 tables. On two of the tables I featured silver candelabras with pearls, rose petals and silver distressed tea glasses with a pink bloom in each. These tables were completed with pink art deco bowls full of Love Hearts and marshmallows to complete the dreamy, romantic theme. On another table I used my Clarence Cliff inspired orange and yellow teacups with a brown tankard full of sunflowers and a small display of mustard pots topped with vintage fabric. Another was an old enamel 'flour' pot with a Hydrangea plant inside and surrounded by delicate blue and white teacups full of old fashioned sweets - rhubard and custard and rosy apples...

I will upload pictures so you can see how fantastic it looked. Lucy Mason from Eastbourne took some professional shots and i'm expecting the disc to pop through the door any minute. I'm really excited to see them because she's very experienced and has some beautiful pictures on her website www.lucymasonphotography.co.uk

Dispite the rain the event was a success with the hosts raising a whopping 30k for the charity!

My sat nav sent me on a wild goose chase when I went to collect my bits and pieces but all in all a resounding success!

Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-2515348311857462356.post-65959114566398420822009-07-16T02:33:00.000-07:002009-07-16T03:07:17.046-07:00Welcome to my blog....
I have decided to start a blog to track the progress of my new event business Doily Days www.doilydays.co.uk

Doily Days was an idea that evolved over time to fully embrace and combine my interest in hospitality and my love of all things vintage, kitsch and shabby chic!

I am a car boot/charity shop fanatic and I started collecting beautiful pieces of mismatching china for my wedding. The collection grew very quickly because I just couldn't resist gorgeous side plates, teacups, jugs for flowers, silver candelabras etc etc.... so I started thinking perhaps I could make a business out of this. And the idea evolved... and evolved and I thought hell, why stop at table decorations? I have experience working for various event companies, I know how these things work, lets go for it! So as you can see from the website I am going to be offering a 'one stop shop' for a vintage wedding - VW Campers and Beetles for wedding day transport, invitations inspired by vintage images, cupcakes etc etc...

The website is not ready yet, I have too many ideas for my web designer to keep up with! I'm really pleased with the positive feedback I've had so far and I'm just looking forward to promoting Doily Days as much as possible and taking lots of bookings. I actually did my first event last month - table decorations for a garden party style wedding in Headley, Hampshire. I had a lot of fun with that and made some really cute fabric party bags for the kids (pictures to be uploaded as soon as possible).

Well, that's enough for now. I'll hope to have some exciting news for you in my quest for publicity and I'm going to be making my own bunting soon. I've been collecting fabulous scraps of material from car boots and charity shops - so I'll upload some pictures so you can see how it turns out!Helen - Doily Dayshttp://www.blogger.com/profile/14871555973605070085noreply@blogger.com0
